Privacy & Legal Information

PIPEDA Compliant

Look, we get it - nobody actually reads these things. But since we're lawyers who specialize in compliance, we figured we'd better practice what we preach. We've tried to make this as straightforward as possible without the usual legal mumbo-jumbo.

Information We Collect

Here's the deal - when you reach out to us or use our website, we're gonna collect some info. It's mostly the basics you'd expect from any law firm:

  • Contact Details: Name, email, phone number, company name - the stuff you give us when filling out forms or calling our office
  • Technical Data: IP addresses, browser type, device info, and how you navigate our site (we use this to make sure everything's working right)
  • Legal Matter Info: Whatever you share with us about your business needs, contracts, compliance issues, etc.
  • Communication Records: Emails, phone call notes, meeting summaries - basically our paper trail of working together

How We Use Your Information

We're not in the business of selling your data or anything sketchy like that. We use what you give us to actually help you:

  • Providing legal services you've asked for (kind of the main point here)
  • Responding to your inquiries and keeping you updated on your matters
  • Meeting our professional obligations under the Law Society of Ontario rules
  • Sending occasional updates about changes in law that might affect your business (you can opt out anytime)
  • Improving our website and services based on how people use them

Your Rights Under PIPEDA

Canada's got some solid privacy laws, and we follow 'em. You've got the right to:

  • Access: Ask us what info we've got on you (though some stuff might be protected by solicitor-client privilege)
  • Correction: Tell us if something's wrong and we'll fix it
  • Withdrawal: Change your mind about marketing emails or other non-essential communications
  • Complaint: If you think we've messed up, you can complain to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada

Data Security

We take security seriously - it'd be pretty embarrassing for a tech compliance firm not to. We use encrypted communications, secure servers, limited access controls, and regular security audits. That said, nothing's 100% foolproof, but we're doing everything reasonable to keep your stuff safe.

How Long We Keep Your Info

The Law Society requires us to keep client files for at least six years after the matter closes. Some records we might keep longer if there's a good reason (like ongoing corporate governance stuff). Marketing contact info gets cleaned out if you haven't engaged with us in three years.

Sharing Your Information

We don't just hand your info to random people. We might share it with:

  • Other professionals working on your matter (accountants, consultants, etc.) - only with your okay
  • Court officials or regulatory bodies if legally required
  • Service providers who help us run our practice (cloud storage, email systems) - they're all bound by confidentiality agreements

Website Usage

This website's here to give you info about our services and let you get in touch. It's not legal advice - for that, you gotta actually hire us. Just browsing around doesn't create a lawyer-client relationship.

No Attorney-Client Relationship

Can't stress this enough - sending us an email or filling out a contact form doesn't automatically make us your lawyers. We need to have an actual conversation, check for conflicts of interest, and sign an engagement letter. Until that happens, don't send us confidential stuff through the website.

Engagement Terms

When we do take you on as a client, here's how it works:

  • We'll send you an engagement letter spelling out what we're doing, what it'll cost, and what you can expect
  • Our fees are based on time, complexity, and value - we'll be upfront about it
  • You'll get regular updates and invoices (usually monthly for ongoing matters)
  • Either of us can end the relationship with proper notice, subject to our professional obligations

Content Accuracy

We try to keep the info on this site current and accurate, but laws change and we might not update every page immediately. Don't make major business decisions based solely on what you read here - talk to us first.

Intellectual Property

Everything on this site - the content, design, logos - belongs to us or our licensors. You can read it and share links, but don't copy our stuff wholesale or use our branding without permission.

Limitation of Liability

We're careful with our work, but this website's provided "as is." We're not liable for decisions you make based on general info here. Once you're a client, different rules apply - those are in your engagement letter.

General Information Only

Let's be crystal clear - this website provides general information about our firm and areas of practice. It's not legal advice tailored to your specific situation. Laws are complex, facts matter, and what works for one company might be terrible for another.

No Guarantees

We're good at what we do, but we can't guarantee specific outcomes. Legal matters involve uncertainty, changing regulations, and factors outside anyone's control. What we can promise is thorough, professional work based on current law and best practices.

Jurisdiction

We're licensed in Ontario and focus on Canadian law, particularly federal regulations around technology, privacy, and corporate governance. If your matter involves other jurisdictions, we'll work with local counsel or refer you to someone better suited.

Links to Other Sites

Sometimes we link to external resources - government sites, industry organizations, whatever. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for their content or privacy practices. Use 'em at your own discretion.

Changes to These Policies

We might update these policies from time to time as our practice evolves or regulations change. We'll post the new version here with an updated date. Major changes? We'll let active clients know directly.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by Ontario law. Any disputes would be handled in Toronto courts, though honestly, we'd rather work things out amicably first.
